Biography

Gabriele Burgio (Florence, 1954) earned a law degree in Florence, specializing in private international law, and obtained an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau.
He began his career at Bankers Trust, working from 1982 to 1993 at the firm’s offices in New York, Milan, and Rome. In 1993, he joined the CIR Group as CEO of its subsidiary Cofir, a holding company listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange and operating in Spain and Portugal.
From 1997 to 2011, he served as CEO of NH Hotels, transforming the company from a local operator specializing in 3- and 4-star hotels in Spain into an international group present in 25 countries, with the number of hotels growing from 66 to 401 and revenue increasing 13-fold.
Since May 2012, Gabriele Burgio has been Chairman and CEO of Alpitour World, a leader in travel and the largest integrated company in the tourism sector in Italy. Under his leadership, the Group embarked on a path of renewal and reorganization that led to the acquisition of Eden Viaggi in 2018, at that time the second-largest tour operator in Italy.
During the pandemic, which hit the tourism sector harder than any other, Gabriele Burgio led a major reorganization and optimization of the Group, with a particular focus on the Tour Operating Division, through the TREVOLUTION and inNOVA projects. In addition, he promoted the expansion of the Neos airline fleet, which now comprises 18 state-of-the-art aircraft, and the development of the VOIhotels and VRetreats hotel collections, which today include 26 properties.
A speaker at major international conferences in the tourism sector, Gabriele Burgio has received numerous awards: the Tiepolo Prize (2002), the title of “Manager of the Year in Spain” (2003), the “Excellence in Tourism” award from His Royal Highness Felipe II (2007), the title of Grand Officer of the Order of the Star conferred by the President of the Italian Republic (2010), and the “Big Deal” Award at the Private Equity-Backed Managers Awards, an annual initiative that honors the top managers leading Italian companies backed by private equity investors (2025).
