Biography

Luca Mercalli (Turin, 1966), climatologist, master in mountain sciences at the Université de Savoie-Mont-Blanc, director of the magazine Nimbus, chairs the Italian Meteorological Society, a national association founded in 1865. He researches on alpine climates and glaciers and he teaches environmental sustainability in schools and universities in Italy (University of Turin-SSST), Switzerland and France and practices it personally, living in a solar-powered house, travelling by electric car and cultivating his own vegetable garden. He is a consultant of the European Union and scientific advisor of ISPRA – Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research. For RAI he participated in “Che tempo che fa”, “Scala Mercalli” and “TGMontagne” and Rainews24. Columnist for Il Fatto Quotidiano, he worked first at La Repubblica and then at La Stampa and has to his credit thousands of articles and over 2600 conferences. Among his books: Philosophy of the clouds (Rizzoli), Travel in time that ago (Einaudi), Let’s get ready (Chiarelettere), No more time (Einaudi), The climate that changes (BUR), Climb in the mountains (Einaudi) and the children’s book Uffa che hot (ElectaKids).
